The Patan City is designed in the shape of Dharma Chakra, which is a shape that exhibits paths to enlightenment based on the teachings of Buddha. Patan is the centre of exquisitely ancient craftwork in the midst of urbanization. Patan is also known as Lalitpur or the "city of fine arts" This Buddhist City is said to have been founded by the Buddhist Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. Patan is the source of arts and architecture in the valley, a great center both of the Newari Buddhist religion and of traditional arts & crafts with 136 bahals or courtyards and 55 major temples. Well known among these are the Krishna Mandir, Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, Kumbheshwar temple, Jagatnarayan temple & the Mahabouddha temple. Patan is enclosed within 4 Buddhist stupas set on the four-corners of the outer boundaries of this ancient city.

Patan Durbar Square boasts of many famous sites and unique architectures. The ancient palaces, temples and shrines with exquisite carving are scattered around Patan Durbar Square. Patan Durbar has many famous sites and unique architectures - Krishna Mandi, Bhimsen temple, Hiranya Varna Mahabhihar are just a few among the temples offering you an ecstasy of paintings, wood and metal carvings. The major attractions of Patan Durbar Square are the stone temple of Lord Krishna, the Royal Bath with many carvings on stone, Viswanath temple and the temple of Bhimsen with a magnificent golden balcony overlooking the square. Many more temples are dedicated to Ganesh, the elephant-headed god, Shiva, Narsingh, Taleju and others, situated in the Patan Durbar Square. Patan Durbar Square which has the fine collection of art works crafted by local craftsmen. The hundreds of antiques exhibited here dates back to 15th century till date which majorly shows the dual mix of hindu and Buddhist culture.
